Garmin has posted an update to its MapSource mapping software, moving from 6.15.4 to 6.15.6. Some of the changes are operating system related, including dropping support for Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows NT and continuing to support for Windows Vista. Other changes in this version include:
Getting a screen capture from some of the Garmin handheld mapping GPS units or PNDs isn’t as easy as it should be. I wish there was a button on many of these units that allow me to capture a shot of my screen when I’m not connected to a computer via a USB cable. If I need a screen shot, I have to turn my Garmin 60CSx off when I get to something interesting. Once I get back to a computer, I have to connect via USB and quickly turn on the unit and grab the image with xImage before the screen changes. It works, it’s free, and it’s better than nothing! From Garmin:
xImage allows you to retrieve and update images on your GPS. For example, xImage makes it possible to get a screenshot from most GPS models. In addition, with certain newer models, xImage allows you to update some images (splash screen, waypoint symbols, etc.) with your own creations.
Garmin reports that xImage works with the following GPS units: eTrex Legend C, eTrex Legend Cx, eTrex Venture Cx, eTrex Vista C, eTrex Vista Cx, GPS 60, GPSMAP 60, GPSMAP 60C, GPSMAP 60Cx, GPSMAP 60CS, GPSMAP 60CSx, GPSMAP 76C, GPSMAP 76Cx, GPSMAP 76CS, GPSMAP 76CSx, GPSMAP 276C, GPSMAP 376C, GPSMAP 296, GPSMAP 396, StreetPilot c310, StreetPilot c320, StreetPilot c330, StreetPilot c340, StreetPilot c510, StreetPilot c550, StreetPilot i2, StreetPilot i3, StreetPilot i5, StreetPilot 2610, StreetPilot 2650, StreetPilot 2720, StreetPilot 2730, Quest, and Quest2.
Have you ever used Garmin nRoute software? The trip computer tab can give you some useful statistics about your trip. I challenge anyone to match my Max Speed statistic shown in the image below. The image was not Photoshopped, I really hit 907 miles per hour while I had my Garmin 60CSx and nRoute running, but it wasn’t in a car. Some of those numbers were recorded during a plane flight (I don’t remember the aircraft type or where I was going). I thought it was worth sharing because I had to do a double-take as I was driving down Interstate 30 and I didn’t remember breaking the speed limit that badly!

Environmental/Natural Resource Tools for ArcPad - v.1.0 - 104.76 KB
This suite of tools, located on a single toolbar, allows environmental, agriculture and other natural resource field workers to make sampling grids, calculate statistics for field data attributes, select which layers should be editable and navigate to specific field locations using ArcPad.
The tools download includes a read_me.txt file containing installation instructions and how each tool can be used. The tools are designed for use in ArcPad 6.0.2 and later. Although they might well be usable in older versions, this testing has not been done.
AddXY - v.1.0 - 2.74 KB
AddXY (v1.0) is an ArcView extension that should work with ArcView 3.0 and later. It adds the X and Y values of points (shapefiles or coverages) to their attribute tables. It adds the X and Y values of polygon centroids (shapefiles or coverages) to their attribute tables. It will add the X and Y value of a polygon’s labelpoint to its attribute table. Due to a bug in ArcView, it does not work consistently with node coverages, so this has been removed. The X and Y columns in the attribute table should be created with the same names and precision that the ARC/INFO command “addxy” would create.
